Southwest Harbor
Southwest Harbor is the service center of the Quiet Side, with a working waterfront, local restaurants, inns, boat trips, and fast access to Echo Lake and western Acadia trails.

Southwest Harbor developed as a fishing and maritime center at the southwest entrance to Somes Sound. The village exported lumber and fish, built working vessels, supported lobster and sardine canneries, and became an early steamboat and hotel stop on Mount Desert Island.
It separated from Tremont and incorporated in 1905. Boatbuilding remains part of its identity: Hinckley began here in 1928 servicing local lobster boats before becoming known for yachts.
